Sprint Announces $60 Monthly Unlimited Plan For Individuals (Updated)

Following the announcement of its”Family Pack” plan for families earlier this week, Sprint has formally announced the launch of a new plan for individuals that features unlimited data for $20 less than T-Mobile’s own unlimited plan, excluding taxes and fees. To make things even more compelling, the plan will be made available to new and existing customers beginning on Friday, August 22nd. To qualify for the plan, customers must purchase their device through Sprint Easy Pay, pay full retail price or bring their own compatible device, as those are the only requirements for the new service plan.

Sprint further claims that the new plan saves customers $480 over two years against T-Mobile’s $80 everyday pricing as well as $120 over two years versus T-Mobile’s promotional pricing. With this change, Sprint is now looking to position as the absolute leader in low-cost wireless service after struggling with the completion of its Network Vision network overhaul.

Update: As is becoming terribly common with Sprint’s promotions designed to draw customers to the carrier, there is a key limitation attached to the $60 unlimited plan for individuals found in the fine print and is bolded below for emphasis:

$60 Unlimited Plan: Includes unlimited domestic Long Distance calling, texting and data. Third-party content/downloads are add’l charge. Int’l svcs are not included. Pricing may vary for existing customers. Excludes discounted phones. Plan will appear on your bill as $30/Unltd Talk & Text and $30/UnlimitedData. Includes unlimited on-network data. Customers under a 1 or 2 year Service Agreement and moving to the Sprint $60 Unlimited plan have a higher monthly rate of up to $25/month until they reach upgrade eligibility.
Usage Limitations: Other plans may receive prioritized bandwidth availability. To improve data experience for the majority of users, throughput may be limited, varied or reduced on the network. Sprint may terminate service if off-network roaming usage in a month exceeds: (1) 800 min. or a majority of min.; or (2) 100MB. Prohibited network use rules apply.

With the above limitation, in place since the elimination of the Any Mobile Anytime plans with Unlimited My Way plans. the plan starts to look a lot less compelling and that’s before factoring in taxes and fees into the equation, as Sprint also features the highest tax/fee rates out of all four carriers.
