Samsung Windows 8 Phone Goes Official

Samsung Ativ SE, a windows based OS phone is now official. The device running on Windows Phone 8 is a 5-inch 1080p display, a 13-megapixel camera, and an unspecified 2.3GHz quad-core processor (most likely the Snapdragon 800) with 2GB of RAM. It also has a 2,600mAh battery, 16GB of storage, and microSD card expansion.

Though Samsung is yet to formally announce the phone, but Verizon has began to take pre-orders. Verizon is even offering to give away one free for any pre-order. The device cost $599.99  (without contract) on their site. Verizon also promises to start shipping as from April 12th.

Apple To Host Worldwide Developers Conference In June 2014

Its being revealed that Apple will be holding its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2 through 6 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. The company announced othis on Thursday.

The focus for this years conference is on Apple's two major platforms, iOS and OS X.
Developers interested in attending can apply for tickets (each will set you back $1,599) through the 

WWDC website between Thursday and Monday. However, applying for the tickets doesn't automatically grant you access to the conference. Instead, Apple will randomly select 5,000 participants, who will be publicly announced on April 7 at 5:00 p.m. PT.

BBM To Arrive On Windows Phone, CEO Reaffirms

During the Mobile World Congress the CEO of BlackBerry, John Chen already revealed that BBM will be hitting Microsoft's Windows Phone, even though there was no specific date was stated then.

Now, BlackBerry's CEO John Chen has reaffirmed that the company's plan for Windows Phone smartphones and confirmed that the BBM app will be released by second quarter (May or June) this year. Chen added that the instant messaging service will be released for the Nokia X platforms and the app will come preloaded on some Nokia devices in selective markets. Chen also indicated that BBM will come preinstalled on some Lumia devices, once the app is released for the Windows Phone platform.

Data Or No Data, FireChat Gets You Chatting

Of course there are several chat services around - WeChat, WhatsApp, and a host of others - but this is quite different. FireChat is an iOS-enabled app which uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity framework essentially a peer-to-peer feature that lets you share messages with other app users nearby. This app does not require any data connection whatsoever to work.

The app browses for other users nearby while simultaneously broadcasting to peers that it is available to connect to. According to the company, this "Nearby" mode works best when the devices are within 30-feet.
This allows you to be invited into a "session" with multiple users. Each user has to be within range of just one member of the chat, so the mesh can spread outwards and cover a lot more range as more people join in.

As good as the app sounds its very limiting. Why would you want to download a chat service that you can only send or receive messages within close range. It doesn't sound like an advantage. However, it could be a good tool for enterprise.

The app can only work on iOS for now. The android version is underway.

Flight MH370 'crashed in south Indian Ocean' - Malaysia PM

Malaysia's prime minister has announced that missing flight MH370 crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

Najib Razak said this was the conclusion of fresh analysis of satellite data tracking the flight.
Malaysia Airlines had told the families of the 239 people on board, he said.The BBC has seen a text message sent to families by the airline saying it had to be assumed "beyond reasonable doubt" that the plane was lost and there were no survivors.

There were 227 passengers on flight MH370, many of them Chinese.

Relatives of those on board who watched the announcement at a Beijing hotel wept with grief, and some were taken away on stretchers by medical teams, news agencies reported. Flight MH370 disappeared after taking off on 8 March from Kuala Lumpur.

Religion sitting arrangements agitate Conference delegates

Religion and sitting arrangements sharply divided delegates to the National Conference in Abuja yesterday, its first day of business, and conference materials were not yet ready.

The provision of praying ground for Muslim delegates provoked agitation from  Mike Ozekhome (SAN) who demanded that Christian delegates who were observing the lent season also required a place of prayer, which had not been provided.

Also Tuesday, Charles Edosowan and Sergeant Awuse, delegates from Edo and Rivers state respectively, advocated free sitting, to allow delegates from the same states or regions confer on issues before the conference, but their demands were knocked down by  Olusegun Osoba, who observed that delegates must first see themselves as Nigerians, rather than as clansmen , and that those who wished to confer could do so elsewhere. continue....

Missing Malaysia Airlines plane 'deliberately diverted'

The communications systems of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were deliberately disabled, Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak has said.

According to satellite and radar evidence, he said, the plane then changed course and could have continued flying for a further seven hours.He said the "movements are consistent with the deliberate action of someone on the plane".

Immigrations recruitment: 7 feared dead, dozens injured in stampede in Abuja

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in Nigeria’s capital after thousands of panicked job-seekers stampeded during a government recruitment drive in the national stadium on Saturday.

Survivors told AFP that thousands had gathered to apply for jobs with the immigration department in the Abuja stadium.

One witness said the stampede broke out as applicants surged towards a central stage. They said only one entrance to the 60,000-capacity stadium was open. It wasn’t clear how many people were inside at the time of the crush. continue...

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has distributed cheques totalling N160 million to 160 graduates of the state origin who made first class between 2006 and 2013. Each of them got N1 million.

Court grants APGA’s application to join suit against Anambra Gov-elect

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted an application by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) seeking to be joined in a suit against Anambra Gov-elect, Willie Obiano.

As reported, the plaintiffs, Ugochukwu Ikegwuonu and Kenneth Moneke, had instituted the suit alleging that Obiano registered twice as a voter prior to his election.

FG offers 90 Hyundai cars in centenary lottery

The Federal Government has rolled out a 90-day lottery programme to complement activities commemorating the country’s centenary celebration.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, flagged off the programme on Monday in Abuja in which N100million was announced as the star price in addition to 90 Hyundai cars which would be won on a daily basis for 90days.

Bayelsa drags EFCC to court over Alamieyesiegha loot

Bayelsa State Government has asked an Abuja Federal High Court to order the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to immediately remit to it the N1.4bn, and another $1.3m recovered from a former governor of the state, Diepreye Alamieyesiegha.

The suit was filed by one Mr. George Uboh, the Chief Executive of Panic Alert Security System, who said he was acting with the mandate of the Bayelsa State Government.

Uboh said in line with the said mandate, he wrote to the EFCC requesting that the funds be remitted within seven days.

Ekiti gov: PDP disqualifies Olowoporoku, two others

The Peoples Democratic Party Screening Committee on the 2014 Ekiti Governorship Election has disqualified three aspirants from taking part in the play’s governorship primaries.

Those disqualified by the committee, which is headed by Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, are Senator Bode Olowoporoku, Bosede Dada and Peter Obafemi.

Olowoporoku was disqualified on the basis that he did not produce tax clearance and that there was no evidence of court judgment overturning on his previous expulsion from the party.

Dada was also accused of not having evidence of payment of membership dues , no West African School Certificate and no production of tax clearance certificate.

In the case of Obafemi, he was said to be unable to produce his National Youth Service discharge certificate.

With the disqualification of the three aspirants, the coast is now clear for the remaining 13 aspirants to take part in the March 15 governorship primaries of the party in the state.

PDP can’t win Rivers, Amaechi tells Jonathan

The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has dismissed President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration that the PDP will take over Rivers State in the 2015 general elections.

President Jonathan had in PDP rallies in Owerri, Lafia, Sokoto and most recently, Minna expressed confidence that the party would regain the five states whose governors defected to the opposition.

The states are — Kano, Sokoto, Kwara, Rivers and Adamawa.

But Amaechi, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Chief Tony Okocha, said over 90 per cent of the voting population in Rivers State were members of the APC.

Google Glass could help stop emerging public health threats around the world

The much-talked-about Google Glass — the eyewear with computer capabilities — could potentially save lives, especially in isolated or far-flung locations, say scientists.

They are reporting development of a Google Glass app that takes a picture of a diagnostic test strip and sends the data to computers, which then rapidly beam back a diagnostic report to the user.

The information also could help researchers track the spread of diseases around the world. The study appears in the journal ACS Nano, a publication of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. Continue...

Smartphones become ‘eye-phones’ with low-cost devices developed by ophthalmologists

Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have developed two inexpensive adapters that enable a smartphone to capture high-quality images of the front and back of the eye. The adapters make it easy for anyone with minimal training to take a picture of the eye and share it securely with other health practitioners or store it in the patient's electronic record.

"Think Instagram for the eye," said one of the developers, assistant professor of ophthalmology Robert Chang, MD

36 Hours Later report on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 yet to be found

A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing disappeared from radar systems on Friday — and authorities still have no clue where it's gone.

‘‘So far there’s no report of any sightings,’’ Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, director general of Malaysia’s Department of Civil Aviation, said at a Sunday morning news conference in Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The company says it is "fearing for the worst."

Thirty-four aircraft, 40 ships, and officials from no fewer than 8 countries are involved in the search.

That an international jet liner can apparently vanish while cruising at 35,000 feet, with no sign of a distress signal or trouble, has rattled the nerves and captured the attention of many. That is, after all, the safest portion of a flight.

While we don't know much of the plane's whereabouts, or what happened to it after it broke contact with an air control tower about two hours after takeoff, some details are beginning to coalesce.
