Senate Confirms Appointment of Service Chiefs

The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of the newly appointed service chiefs as forwarded to them by President Goodluck Jonathan.
They include Air Marshall Alex Badeh as chief of defence staff, Major General Kenneth Minimah as chief of army staff, Rear Admiral Usman Jibrin as chief of Naval staff and Air Vice Marshall Adesola Amosu as chief of Air staff. Continue...
The Senators unanimously adopted the report of the joint committee on defence, army, navy and airforce led by Senator George Thompson Sekibo (PDP, Rivers) which screened the nominees and recommended that they be confirmed.
The committee said it did not receive any petition against any of the nominees and as such called for their confirmation.
Speaking shortly after the appointments were confirmed, deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu who presided over the sitting charged the military bosses to live up expectations.
Ekweremadu said this was the first time the law requiring that the service chiefs appointments be confirmed by the parliament was adhered to, saying "this is the standard practice in most democracies and we will do our best to sustain democracy."
