HTC won’t make a smartwatch after all, rumor says

According to the ever-present “sources familiar with the matter”, HTC has decided to give up on the idea of creating its very own smartwatch.
In an age in which seemingly every Android smartphone maker has branched out into this new wearable category (undoubtedly helped by the existence of the Android Wear platform), this might sound like an odd decision.

And unfortunately, the source of this report doesn’t really know why HTC chose not to get into the smartwatch trend for the time being. However, the speculation is that rising costs and “a lack of wow factor” may have played a huge part in the decision.
That lack of “wow”, translated, might mean that HTC got scared of the increasing competition in this segment. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen new smartwatches announced by Samsung, LG, Motorola, Asus, and Sony. For a nascent market, the smartwatch space sure is getting more and more crowded by the day.
The HTC smartwatch was rumored a few times so far, starting in October of last year. At one point we were led to believe we’d see it get unveiled at MWC in February, but that obviously didn’t happen. The wearable was supposedly going to be “a reworking” of the Qualcomm Toq, but in a world dominated by smartwatches running Android Wear, that probably wouldn’t have had a very bright future. So maybe it’s not so bad that it got canceled after all.
